do that I may inherit eternal life? And Jesus said
unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is
none good but one, that is, God. Thou knowest the
commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not
kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness,
Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. And
he answered and said unto him, Master, all these
have I observed from my youth. Then Jesus
beholding him loved him, and said unto him, One
thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever
thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt
have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the
cross, and follow me. And he was sad at that
saying, and went away grieved: for he had great
possessions.”
A young man came to Jesus and it was quite obvious that he had
heard about Jesus long before He ever came to town. He had been
looking forward to the arrival of Jesus because he had heard that
Jesus was speaking about eternal life.
Now -- this rich young ruler had everything money could buy. He had
wealth. He had fame. He had fortune. He was probably handsome
and he knew that anything of this life he could probably purchase.
But he heard about this eternal life Jesus was talking about -- and
he wanted to secure his eternal life as well. He knew one day Jesus
would come to his town and he would approach Him on the subject.
The Bible says that when he saw Jesus approaching -- he literally
went running to Jesus; and as soon as he reached Him, he fell at
His feet and bowed before Jesus.
He came to Jesus; he got on his knees; he looked at Him; and he
said, “Good Master, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”
Now there are two key words in this passage. The word “good”
and the word “inherit.” The word “good” is implying not the fact that
